The city of Puerto Maldonado is the capital of its region, Madre de Dios, in the southeastern part of the Peruvian Amazon. The town was founded in the beginning of the 20th century by settlers collecting wild rubber from the rainforest. With the discovery of the area’s extremely high biodiversity of flora and fauna, tourism had expanded in recent years, and improved many of the city’s services.
City attractions
The city now boasts various places to visit, as well as shops, restaurants, and bars, where you can buy some jungle souvenirs for those back home, and sit back and talk about the day’s sightings, while enjoying a hearty meal of local or international flavours.
Rainforest sights
To protect and preserve the incredibly high biodiversity of the rainforest in the region of Madre
de Dios, the government has created 3 national parks: Manu Biosphere Reserve, Bahuaje-Sonene National Park
and the Tambopata Candamo Reserve. Puerto Maldonado is the gateway to the latter 2 parks, whose entrances
are a few hour’s by boat from the city.
